Updates from City Parks & Recreation

The City of Frederick’s Parks and Recreation facilities provide a wide range of benefits to the community and local economy. In addition to active & passive recreation & play, our parks are centers for arts, culture, and events, and contribute to environmental sustainability. By supporting a desirable living environment, these amenities not only serve residents, but also local companies hoping to attract and retain top workforce talent.

A well-designed parks system also serves to increase tourism and generate sales activity in a local community. Restaurants and businesses located near parks commonly experience an increase in customers when games or events are held. Large destination parks with top-quality amenities have an even greater ability to attract high volumes of out-of-town visitors & spending.

Our business community is fortunate to lean on a robust system of 75 parks and 6 recreation sites across all neighborhoods in the City. 97% of City residents are within a 10-minute walk or less from a Parks and Recreation amenity. The City’s Parks and Recreation Department offers unique and expanding programming across those areas throughout the year for all ages, and ability levels.

Here we take a look at some of the Department’s latest highlights and updates:

Parks Master Plan Update:

Essential Spaces: A Vision for City Parks and Recreation

To ensure that our parks and programming grow along with our community, the City has embarked on a Parks and Recreation Masterplan with the support of BerryDunn (formerly GreenPlay, LLC).

This plan provides guidance for future development and redevelopment of the City’s parks, recreation programming, and facilities. To meet short and long-term objectives, this master park plan will be comprehensive, and will include significant opportunities for public involvement to ensure parks and parks investments meet the desires of the growth, and public demand within the community.  The plan will incorporate energy efficiency and sustainable strategies, evaluate collaborative opportunities with other entities, and explore accessibility opportunities within the current infrastructure.

A draft of the plan can be viewed here.

An Implementation Plan will be brought forward in the coming months for final approval.
