Community Invited to Design Future of East Street Corridor

The City of Frederick is hosting a five-day community visioning “charrette” August 12-16, 2022, and asking for participation from residents, workers, property owners, and business owners to help design the future of the East Street corridor.

A charrette is a collaborative planning process for the public to design the future of East Frederick – for example, on the location of retail shops, housing, and open space – that will shape the future of East Frederick. Ultimately, the community vision will inform the regulations for development (zoning and public infrastructure) in this area.

The charrette begins with a kick-off meeting at 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 12. All charrette activities will take place at the City Hall Annex (140 W. Patrick Street). The main community event, a Hands-On Citizen’s Planning Work-session, will take place the following Saturday, Aug. 13, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Attendees will work on top of an aerial photograph of the study area, literally drawing their aspirations for the future – focusing on topics like walkability, the character and scale of streets, open spaces, and new buildings. This technique ensures that plans and aspirations are rooted in physical reality and that consequences are considered.

After working through the issues, a citizen from each table group will present their major ideas/concepts to the full audience. Many areas of consensus will emerge. These will form the foundation of the new East Frederick Vision Plan and the resulting development regulations (zoning). The consultant team will provide a Work-In-Progress presentation at the close of the charrette Tuesday, August 16 at 7 p.m.
