The City of Frederick is growing both in size and in diversity. A “Diversity Index” measures the probability that two people from the same region will be from a different race/ethnic group. Within Frederick’s population of nearly 80,000 residents, that probability is now 77.5% and projected to continue increasing (JobsEQ).
Representation of the full spectrum of our residents in the local economy —both in business ownership and in products & services offered — is critical to maximizing the potential of our community. Frederick’s robust selection of ethnic food markets has become an exciting example and testament to the benefits of this representation.
Ethnic markets offer specialized food distinct to their region, particularly those not easily found in the aisles of larger supermarket chains. Each grocer’s unique background brings something entirely novel to the Frederick marketplace —providing access to foods from different cultures for every resident to enjoy without leaving City limits.
Across the City, there are currently 14 ethnic market options, totaling nearly 100,000 SF of commercial space. Even better, nearly all of these stores are locally-owned and operated!
