What is an Apprenticeship Program?
An apprenticeship program is an “earn and learn” model that is industry driven and aligned with high quality career fields. The programs combine paid work experiences with classroom instruction, and typically last between one and four years.
While in the program, the apprentice is a full-time employee. The apprentice is paid wages by their employer and are subject to the same expectations of other company employees. The employer assigns a mentor or a journeyman to the apprentice to provide on-the-job training. In addition to this work experience, the apprentice commits to completing designated, related academic instruction.
Though traditionally used in trade occupations, the programs can be used to support non-trade professions as well.
Why Participants are Enrolling in Apprenticeship Programs:
Ability to earn a wage during career training, and to graduate without debt
Real-world experience and practical instruction
Means of earning an industry credential
Opportunity to build industry relationships and contacts
Flexibility to meet individual interests and ambitions
Why Employers Are Building Apprenticeship Programs:
A need for skilled workers
Opportunity for custom, industry-driven training for new and current employees
Ability to receive Maryland tax incentive along with related instruction assistance per apprentice
Lowered hiring costs through a streamlined channel to bring on new workers
Reduced turnover costs and increased employee retention
There are many benefits to an apprenticeship program for both employer and apprentice. Statistic shows that 91% of apprentices remain with their employers upon completion of their program. - Carla Milan, FCC Apprenticeship Coordinator
