On October 28, 2020, The City of Frederick celebrated the completion of the runway extension at Frederick Municipal Airport (FDK). The project brings the total length of Runway 5-23 to 5819’. This new length improves the safety margins for all local aircraft and will accommodate increased fuel and passenger loads for larger jets flying in and out of Frederick.
The extension, which helps cement FDK’s position as the preferred general aviation airport in the Capital Region, was the product of decades of planning and effort. Work for the project began in the 90’s, when the City, with assistance from the FAA, MAA and County, began purchasing and removing nearby obstructions. A total of 15 properties were acquired for demolition between the late 1990’s and 2008. Further obstruction removal required the repositioning of over 400,000 cubic yards of dirt.
The actual construction of the $3.7 million runway extension with taxiway was funded by the FAA, MAA, County and City — 90% FAA, 5% MAA, 2.5% County, and 2.5% City.
The Importance of FDK
Frederick Municipal Airport serves an important role as the designated GA reliever airport for BWI. In 2019, FDK recorded over 95,891 operations (landings & take-offs) – making it the second busiest airport in the state.
The airport houses approximately 250 based aircraft and is home to 105,000 SF of leased buildings and 105 T-Hangars. Income from leased land, buildings and hangars, along with fuel sales and grants is critical for sustainable operations.
Frederick Municipal Airport is a true economic asset to Frederick and the region supporting 1,128 Jobs and more than $100 million in economic impact according to a 2015 study provided by the Maryland Aviation Administration (MAA).
In addition to the economic impact, FDK serves a critical role in both regional and national public health and safety. The airport is the home of State Police Trooper 3 and frequently facilitates flights of service for transplant organ donor flights. FDK maintains critical transportation routes to Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research & Fort Detrick. It’s strategic position near both Camp David and Washington D.C. have provided the President of the United States and other world dignitaries alternative access to the region.
FDK is the home of the National Aviation Community Center (NACC) owned and operated by the Aircraft Owners & Pilot Association (AOPA), which is headquartered at the airport. As the organization’s home-base, the airport maintains a long and strong relationship with the world-renowned aviation advocacy group.
The airport plays a special role in enriching the culture of local community. FDK recently hosted a C-130 flown in to be disassembled and towed to Fort Detrick. It is frequent site of tie downs for blimps visiting the DC area. The airport recently hosted the world’s first no arm pilot, as well as Col Charles McGee — a Tuskeegee Airman celebrating his 100th birthday with a flight out of Frederick. Beyond special events and fly-ins, the airport serves as common recreational outlet for Frederick residents — both as pilots and spectators. Everyday, aviation enthusiasts enjoy the experience of FDK complimented by a delicious meal at the Airways Inn.
